THE NIGHT CABARET

It quickly became clear that the Fools had entered a political labyrinth. The organizing committee of the Cultural Capital is changing directors at a dizzying pace. It is the plaything in a local political struggle about independence, identity, terrorist trauma, money and interference from Madrid. We are gradually being forgotten by these successive directors. But not by the fishing village of San Pedro, where the ship had found refuge. We are welcomed into village life. The night cabaret is running at full speed and is being discovered by artists from the whole Basq country as a unique location in the theatrical landscape. The summer show is an adaptation of Molière’s ‘Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme’ in which the aristocrats speak Spanish and the servants speak Basque. The Basque harbour towns demanded that the show be in Basque language because some of their children speak nothing else. But before the summer tour, the ship was detained by the maritine inspection, a completely illegal measure as long as he hadn’t found out that we had no shipping insurance at all. He did a year later. The night cabaret continued happily.

Rápidamente quedó claro que los Locos habían entrado en un laberinto político. El comité organizador de la Capital Cultural cambia de director a un ritmo vertiginoso. Es el juguete de una lucha política local sobre la independencia, la identidad, el trauma terrorista, el dinero y la interferencia de Madrid. Poco a poco vamos siendo olvidados por estos sucesivos directores. Pero no por el pueblo pesquero de San Pedro, donde el barco había encontrado refugio. Somos bienvenidos a la vida del pueblo. El cabaret nocturno corre a todo trapo y está siendo descubierto por artistas de todo el País Vasco como un lugar único en el panorama teatral. El espectáculo de verano es una adaptación de ‘Bourgeois Gentilhomme’ de Molière en la que los aristócratas hablan español y los sirvientes hablan euskera. Los pueblos portuarios vascos exigieron que el espectáculo fuera en euskera porque algunos de sus hijos no hablan otra cosa. Pero antes de la gira de verano, el barco fue detenido por la inspección marítima, una medida completamente ilegal, siempre y cuando no se hubiera enterado de que no teníamos ningún seguro de envío. Se enteró un año después.
El cabaret nocturno continuó alegremente.
